Arsene Wenger: Japan's No 1 target

Arsene Wenger is being targeted by Japan FA to become its new national manager.

Wenger might have another shot to become a manager of the Japanese Football Federation after his exit from Arsenal, 22 years after managing the Emirate side.

The 67-year-old says he has no intention of heading off into retirement following his Gunners exit, believing he still has more years left in the game.

The Frenchman had been linked with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain but Madrid is now out of the equation after the appointment of Julen Lopetegui while Wenger would be a director football at PSG rather than in management.

Wenger enjoyed a successful spell working in Japan in charge of Nagoya Grampus Eight before joining Arsenal in the mid-90s now Japan wants to bring the Frenchman back to the country.

The former coach, Vahid Halilhodzic who took the national team to the World Cup in Russia was sacked few months to the tournament.

His successor Akira Nishino took over on a short-term contract that expires at the end of this month.

So the country are looking to bring in someone with gravitas to help work with a talented group of young players and develop them into a nation who regularly perform well at international tournaments, and Wenger is one of their top targets.
