Arsenal Wenger has signed off from Emirates Stadium with an excellent performance from his team, beating Burnley 5-0.
It was a perfect celebration for the Arsenal Boss as he marked the end of 22 years in charge of the Arsenal team.
All the discord and disappointments of recent seasons are of the course the backdrop against which Arsene Wenger feels compelled to leave but, for the first afternoon in a very long time, Arsenal supporters did largely unify in acknowledgement of how the good has very much outweighed the bad.
‘Merci Arsene’ was the theme of the day at Emirates Stadium and many of wenger’s finest players were present, as was majority owner Stan Kroenke.
Even though his reason to call time on managing the team was based on negative fan sentiment, Fans turned out massively to honour the Frenchman.
Arsenal had a 64% possession in total, 14 minutes into the game, Aubameyang got Arsene Wenger on his feet after scoring. Aubameyang provider, Alexandre Lacazette offered his own strike just before half-time making it a 2-0 win for Arsenal in the first half of the game. 54 minutes into the second half, Sead Kolasinac made it a 3-0 win.
Jack Wilshere – recalling his own best form – surged through the Burnley defence to feed the ball to the wing-back, who then crashed the ball into the bottom corner of the net with a spear of a shot. Alex Iwobi soon put it into the top corner, before Aubameyang completed the scoring – and the day.
None of those goals got the cheers that Wenger got, though, or someone else leaving. Mertesacker was brought on after 77 minutes for his own last home appearance, and raised the roof. His every touch, then, raised further cheers. It was a wrap
