Four persons were on Wednesday arraigned in a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing six cows.
It was gathered that the defendants- Linus Yachiga, John Tseghe, Oota James and Abdullahi Umaru, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge bordering on alleged criminal conspiracy and theft.
Presenting his case, the prosecutor, Sgt. Adama Owochio, told the court that the defendants were arrested on March 31, by a team, led by Insp. Philip Iorpuu, attached to Adikpo Police Station.
The prosecutor added that the policemen intercepted a truck on Jato-aka, Gboko Road, with Reg. No. ENU- 449-ZX, carrying six cows, reasonably suspected to be stolen.
Owochio said that when the defendants were asked how they got the cows, they could not give satisfactory answer.
He said that investigation into the matter was still ongoing and prayed the court for an adjournment. Sgt Owochio said further that the offences contravened Section 97 and 321 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue State 2004.
The Magistrate, Franca Yuwa, granted bail to the defendants in sum of N50,000 each and a surety each in like sum.
The case has been adjourned till May, 15 for further mention.
