Veteran Highlife singer, Victor Olaiya retires from live gigs

Legendary Highlife musician Victor Olaiya, has retired from active music and live performances.

The singer who used to be a regular performer at the Stadium Hotel, in Lagos has been absent for about a year, due to ailing health.

In July 2013, Victor Olaiya featured 2Baba on the remix of his hit song ‘Baby jowo.

Olaiya’s music style was influenced by James Brown with horn parts harmonised in Brown’s style, as opposed to the mostly unison lines of Afrobeat.

Olaiya released over 26 projects over the course of his life from the late 1950s through to 2012.
