The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged Nigeria’s election management body, INEC, to immediately conclude all postponed re-run elections in the country.
Its Committees on Legislative Compliance and Electoral Matters were mandated to ensure compliance with a June the 23rd resolution regarding pending re-run polls.
The motion was sponsored by six members led by Minority Leader, Leo Ogor.
Ogor cited sections 48 and 49 of the 1999 constitution as amended, which stipulates the number of federal legislators to all states and concluded that failure to comply with the provisions is unconstitutional.
He recalled the Court of Appeal ruling in December, 2015, directed that rerun elections in Rivers state be conducted within sixty days.
The lawmakers said to safeguard democracy, constitutional provisions must strictly be adhered to.
