The Nigerian Senate has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly fill up all the vacant positions in the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, rather than adopting a piecemeal approach of appointing a few people at a time.
The Senators’ resolutions followed a motion by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu which also urged INEC to urgently conduct all pending rerun elections in the country.
The decision followed the nomination of six persons for the positions of INEC national commissioners by President Buhari as forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The names of the nominees are: Okechukwu Ibeanu, Anambra State; May Agbamuche-Mbu, Delta State; Ahmed Mu’azu, Gombe State; Mohammed Haruna, Niger State; Adekunle Ogunmola, Oyo State; and Abubakar Nahuche, Zamfara State.
President Buhari also nominated commissioners for the National Population Commission. They are: Benedict Ukpong, Akwa Ibom State; Gloria Izonfuo, Bayelsa State; Kupchi Iyanya, Benue State; Haliru Bala, Kebbi State; and Eyitayo Oyetunji, Oyo State.
