Arrest of judges not to ridicule judiciary : Lai Mohammed

The Nigerian Government has expressed the highest respect for the Nigerian judiciary and insists that its recent arrest of seven judges including two from the Supreme Court is not intended to ridicule the third arm of government.
This comment was made by Information Minister Lai Mohammed while briefing Statehouse Correspondents after this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

The recent move by the Department of State Security against seven judges continues to generate controversy amid the polity on the manner, timing and legality.

It is a topic the Federal Cabinet is careful about commenting on, but it stands with the Secret Service insisting that proper procedure was followed in the arrest of the judges.

The Information Minister described as untenable, the argument that the NJC is the only authority that can discipline judges, pointing out that what the judges have been accused of is different from  when a judge is accused of professional misconduct.
