TVC E. Germany on Wednesday defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the semi-finals of the Olympic football event, ending the country’s hope of a repeat of their 1996 feat at the games.
The Germans grabbed their first goal in the 9th minute when a Serge Gnabry’s clever pass into the box fooled the Nigerian defence for Max Meyer to latch on to.
Both teams have had solid tournaments thus far. Nigeria won its group with two victories to kick off the tournament, a 5-4 win over Japan and a 1-0 victory over Sweden, before a loss to Colombia in an insignificant third group game. But the team showed strength and resilience in a 2-0 win over Denmark in the quarterfinals.
The Germans on their part have improved as the tournament progressed. The team drew with Mexico to open its tournament before tying Korea Republic 3-3. In its final group game, the team managed 10 goals against Fiji in a 10-0 win. But that was nothing compared to the team’s 4-0 thrashing of a solid Portuguese side in the quarterfinal, the most one-sided match of the round.
