The NAN reports that at least 15 inmates have escaped in a prison break that happened at Nsukka Prison in Enugu state.
The source at the jail said that the prisoners broke their cells and scaled over the perimeter fence late Tuesday, August 9. He said: “The inmates carefully opened their cells and scaled the perimeter fence of the prisons.
“Before prison officials on night duty knew what was happening, about 15 inmates had escaped.” Controller of prison Lawrence Okonkwo confirmed the accident but denied to give the number of inmates who fled. “Yes there was a jailbreak last night in Nsukka prison but I am not in a position to say how many prisoners escaped,” he stated. “We are expecting the Enugu state prisons controller, Mr Isaiah Amariri, in Nsukka prison so that we brief him on what happened last night.
“He will be the one to tell the public the number of inmates that escaped, the re-arrested ones and efforts put in place to arrest those still on the run.” Officials of the Nigeria Prisons Service were spotted in parts of Nsukka and its environs on August 10 searching for fleeing prisoners.
The third jailbreak was last week reported in Koton Karfe as the old prison facility witnessed similar jailbreaks in 2010 and 2013. The jailbreak happens about a month after two prisoners escaped in a jailbreak from a maximum security prison in Kuje, Niger state.
