The Finnish DJ found worldwide acclaim at the turn of the century when his trance banger ‘Sandstorm’ topped the charts around the world, receiving heavy airplay before going on to be used to soundtrack countless adverts, TV shows, games, movies and more. Sadly, it was all based on lies and deceit.
Ville Virtanen, better known by his stage name Darude /dəˈruːd/, is an electronic music producer and DJ from Eura, Finland. He started making music in 1995 and released the platinum selling hit single “Sandstorm” in late 1999.
Darude, was taking part in Reddit AMA session when one fan asked if he’d ever experienced the meteorological phenomenon.
“No,” he confessed, “but [I have been in] a smaller one, dust devil, or whatever you want to call it…”
Seeking to soften the blow of his fraud, he continued: “AND, I’ve got a picture from a few years back, when I was landing in Arizona I believe it was, where I literally landed like few minutes a sandstorm blew thru the airport area and you can see the edge on the pic. I tweeted something like “I’ve arrived” with the pic! :)”
