TVC E. Super Eagles Captain Mikel Obi has donated $30,000 to the Nigeria Olympic team camped in Atlanta in preparation for the Rio Games next month. According to AfricanFootball.com, a player in the Dream Team VI squad revealed that the team have been fairing from their own purse without government help before the Chelsea star came to their rescue.
“Mikel has donated $30,000 to the team. You know we have not received money since we left Nigeria,” the player said. The national U-23 coach had earlier pleaded with the authorities to come their rescue as they were cash-trapped in their base in Atlanta and few days ago, they were robbed of valuables when a burglar broke his car.
An unnamed Nigerian based in Atlanta footed the bills in their first 10-days in the United States and the Olympic football team have been using their personal funds to survive. The former Super Eagles coach also recently revealed that he has not been paid five month salaries as the last payment came in January this year.
The Dream Team VI can now breath a sigh of relief following Mikel’s kind gesture to save the nation from embarrassment. Mikel was named captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympic Games few days ago which comprises 85 contingents that will participate in the competition.
