History will be made this weekend in the Super Rugby match between the Melbourne Rebels and the Stormers in Melbourne.
Australian referee Amy Perrett will act as an assistant referee in the game, becoming the first female to officiate in the Southern Hemisphere’s main club competition.
“I am really proud to be given this honour this weekend and I certainly hope this opens the door for more women to officiate the top level across Rugby”, Perrett said of her appointment.
“I am just focused on doing my job to the best of my ability and will be joining a fantastic team of SANZAAR refs right across Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina who referee Super Rugby week in and week out.”
She is widely regarded as one of the top female officials in the World. In 2014, Perrett refereed the Women’s World Cup Final in Paris, when England defeated Canada.
Perrett follows in the footsteps of Irish referee Helen O’Reilly. Earlier this year, O’Reilly acted as an assitant referee in Munster’s Pro12 win over Zebre in Musgrave Park.
