World Championship leader Nico Rosberg has begun discussions with Ferrari about a possible move to the Italian outfit, according to reports.
The Mercedes driver is out of contract at the end of the season, and while both the German team and their driver have spoken of a desire to extend Rosberg’s stay with the Silver Arrows, there are growing reports that Rosberg may replace Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari for the 2017 campaign.
Since making his return to Ferrari in 2014, Raikkonen has failed to achieve the desired results, and while he finished fourth in last season’s World Championship, he was some 128 points behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel who ended the campaign in third.
Last season it was Valtteri Bottas who was linked with a spot beside Vettel in the Ferrari garage, but it’s now Rosberg who is rumoured to be on his way to the Scuderia.
Should Rosberg depart the Brackley-based team, Fernando Alonso has been touted as a possible replacement, and team boss Toto Wolff has said that the Spaniard would come under consideration should they enter the driver market – although he is hopeful they won’t have to.
“Fernando is one of the best drivers in history, I love his character, but our priority now is Nico,” Wolff told Spanish paper El Mundo.
“If he does not want to renew, then we will consider other options, like Fernando. [His age is] not a problem – his speed and his motivation are still there.”
