A former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has revealed how he stopped ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo from sleeping in the state during a proposed state visit when he was in power.
The former governor said he took that action in order to curb systemic waste and ensure accountability in governance, Daily Sun reports.
“I told him, Mr. President, you can come in the morning and go in the evening because I don’t have a place for you to stay,” Obi explained. He disclosed this on Tuesday, May 24, while delivering a lecture on leadership at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) during the 2016 edition of the Biennial Chinua Achebe Memorial Lecture, organised in honour of the late literary icon, by the institution’s Faculty of Arts.
According to him, the maintenance of the Presidential Lodge in the state was stopped during his administration to utilize resources. Obi said the irrational celebration of corrupt politicians and their ill-gotten wealth by the masses was to blame for the corruption and rot in the country.
Also speaking, Chuka Utazi, the senator representing Enugu north senatorial district said there are many youths in the country capable handling leadership position but they are not given the opportunity.
