TVC E. About 100 traders were, yesterday, displaced after fire razed a section of the popular Ladipo market in Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos State, with goods worth several millions destroyed in the over 50 shops involved.
Traders blamed the fire disaster, which started at about 3a.m., Wednesday, on power surge that emanated from Osoro Junction of the market. The traders explained that the fire started few minutes after the high-tension cable supplying electricity to the community malfunctioned, detached from the pole and fell on the shops.
When reporters visited the scene at about 11a.m., smoke was still billowing from the shops. The traders were sighted still sourcing for water from the drainage to put out the smokes from the shops.
Speaking to reporters, Best Daniel, one of the traders, lamented that the fire destroyed goods worth several millions. Daniel explained that aside the goods destroyed, one of the affected traders lost over N350, 000 left in his safe to purchase vehicle spare-parts, yesterday.
The chairman of the affected market, Mr. Felix Okoro, in an interview with reporters, said that over 50 shops were razed by the inferno. . …We exhausted our extinguishers —Traders Describing the inferno as mysterious, Okoro lamented that they exhausted all their industrial extinguishers, but the fire kept raging. According to him: “We tried putting out the fire before it escalated with over 50 industrial fire extinguishers, but all efforts proved abortive.”
