Following the trial, Sunderland Association Football Club were engulfed in a controversy over exactly how much the club knew about what its player had done.

SAFC allowed Johnson to play on before finally sacking him earlier this year after his guilty pleas. The club later said it was ‘so very sorry’ for letting down a 15-year-old fan and chief executive Margaret Byrne resigned.

Byrne admitted she made ‘a serious error of judgement’ in advising the board that the midfielder could carry on playing after he was initially suspended last March.

Johnson, a £10 million signing, helped the team avoid relegation from the Premier League last year.

Ahead of the sentencing, the NSPCC urged the Football Association to act so SAFC’s handling of Johnson’s case doesn’t become a ‘cultural problem within football’.

Peter Saunders, the NSPCC chief executive, wrote to FA Chairman Greg Dyke to highlight child protection concerns towards Premier Legue clubs.

However, the NSPCC’s concern lies not in the behaviour of a single individual – although that is itself horrifying – but in the approach taken by Sunderland Football Club when confronted with a serious child protection issue.

‘We are worried this could be a cultural problem within football as a whole and find it concerning clubs may not see incidents such as these as a child protection issue.

‘This is not only about one rogue player that behaved badly, but a club that seemingly did not have child protection priorities embedded into their culture. It was not equipped to handle these allegations and seemingly did not deal with them appropriately, or indeed seriously.’
