“Spotlight” wins Best picture at the Academy Awards

TVC E –  The movie about Catholic Church abuse won against “The Big Short“, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn“, “Mad Max: Fury Road“, “The Martian“, “The Revenant” and “Room“.

In his acceptance speech the film’s producer Michael Sugar said: “This film gave a voice to survivors, and this Oscar amplifies that voice, which we hope can become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican”.

The film, which received six nominations at the ceremony and took home two awards last night – it also won the award for best original screenplay.

"Spotlight" writers Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy pose with their trophies for Original Screenplay “Spotlight” is about Boston Globe journalists who uncover a story revealing that paedophile priests were allowed to get away with abuse in the Catholic Church.

The film stars Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams who were both nominated at the awards.

The 88th Academy award was held on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Actor and comedian Chris Rock hosted the ceremony.

The event saw Leonardo DiCaprio win his first Oscar and beat the likes of Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) for “best actor” in a leading role.
