Former head coach of Warri Wolves, Sam Okpodu has been confirmed as the new Ikorodu coach for Ikorodu United while Benson Edema is his assistant.
The new coach is expected to help the team make a turn around after a series of awful performances in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
Out of the six games already played, the Ikorodu boys have managed to win one, draw two and lost three.
Although, the assistant coacn, Benson Edema will be in charge of their Week 7 home game against Giwa FC, Okpodu will officially assume the role, when Ikorodu United face Nasarawa United in Makurdi.
Explaining why Sam Okpodu was chosen, Tunde Ayoola, an official of the club had this to say;
“I must tell you right away that it’s a done deal, coach Sam Okpodu has signed with us as head coach today (Friday March 18) in Lagos exactly 16.55 hours,”
“Officially he is the head coach of Ikorodu United for the ongoing top flight domestic league season. Okpodu will assume full charge of the side in NPFL match day 8 clash at Nasarawa United in Makurdi.
“Coach Edema Benson will oversee Ikorodu United match day 7 tie against Giwa FC on Sunday in Lagos.
Coach Benson who was originally an interim coach has been reassigned as assistant to the head coach, Okpodu.
“The management mandated Okpodu to stabilize the team, pick one of the continental tickets or worst case scenario finish the season among the top four teams.
He also noted “The mandates are not tough ones given the pedigree of coach Okpodu and that could have been the reason he appended his signatures without hesitation.”
