Lagos State records first case of Lassa fever

TVCE (LAGOS) – Lagos State government has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state.

The State Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris, who confirmed the outbreak, said in a media briefing televised live on TVC Nigeria, that the unfortunate incident was recorded at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Lagos.

While advising residents to be vigilant and promptly report any suspected case to nearby health centre, Idris reiterates government’s commitment to effectively contain the outbreak of the fever before spreading to other parts of the stat

Lassa fever or Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LHF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus and first described in 1969 in the town of Lassa, in Borno State.

Lassa fever is a member of the Arenaviridae virus family. Similar to ebola, clinical cases of the disease had been known for over a decade, but had not been connected with a viral pathogen
