Tiwa Savage just put out her sophomore effort, titled RED: Romance Expression Dance, an album title that tells me it’s a compilation of amorous, passionate lyrics, set to fast paced, afro-centric instrumentation. I’ll find out if I’m right in a few minutes, after I download it, here. It was first released exclusively on the MTN Music Plus platform, and was subsequently picked up by other websites.
As part of the plug for the 16 track compilation, the Supreme Mavin Dynasty seems to have torn a page out Dr. Dre’s playbook, with a R.E.D. Meme generator. The website, i-am-red.com, has a pretty simple interface, and works by allowing users upload their pictures, and enter their values for the R. E. D. acronym. You can do this by entering text in the fields, or choosing predefined suggestions from drop-down menus (one for each letter). Users are then encouraged to share these images on their social media profiles, with the hashtag #IamRED.
I think it’s a pretty neat idea, and especially on Instagram, will go a long way to publicise the album’s release – if only IG didn’t force us to do the whole “link in bio” thing. The execution is very functional, and worked perfectly all the times I tried it – in all the browsers I tried it in – though I think aesthetically, it could be a lot better – from font, to layout, to color choice.
Still, it’s a step in the right direction. I like that Mavin (SMD) keeps coming up with these cool publicity gimmicks for their song releases. It goes a long way to separate them from the homogenous “Please Download and RT” crowd.
